Progress Monitoring

Progress monitoring is a scientifically based practice that is used to assess students academic performance and evaluate the effectiveness of instruction. Progress monitoring can be implemented with individual students or an entire class.

Progress monitoring is a tool that may help teachers in various ways:

  • Improve their instructional effectiveness
  • Better prepare students for state assessments
  • Improve their students' pass rate
  • Help reduce inappropriate referrals to special education
  • Help teachers write IEP goals
  • Track how well students are doing in inclusive environments

Progress monitorinig has been used by special educators to improve their instructional effectiveness and student performance since the early 1970's. Recently, it has gained national attention with the President's Commission on Excellence in Special Education recommending its use.
